England: How the thin black and white stripes on zebra fur work, researchers at the University of Bristol have discovered. The results, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, show that the thin black and white stripes on the zebra’s fur help horses to ward off horsefly attacks. These irregular and wide stripes create the same dark colored skin that is attractive to the horsefly. The researchers were led by Professor Tim Carew and Dr Martin Howe from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol. Professor Caro said that several studies had shown that horseflies dislike sitting on striped surfaces, but it was not clear what kind of stripes they disliked.
